Never-ending drudgery

What point or purpose is there to a life unending? Simply to survive? To live on interminably? It is not enough. I lament that here, in this place, I have witnessed the death of heroics and martyrdom. Of icons ready to lay down their precious lives for country, family, or belief. Here, where death itself is cheap, there can be no notion of such noble sacrifice. Oh, how I long to return to my beloved Rome to live out whatever few years remained of my natural life amongst the gallant bones of these brave lions of the Republic. These idols made flesh. These gods of the mortal realm. Instead, these old joints remain lashed to this place, aching and bent, too aged and brittle to be useful to anyone. Gods of my homeland, I beseech you: carry me back to my beloved city on the Tibur, or grant me the release of a dignified death. That I may witness the great feats of heroes once more in the fields of Elysium. -Andeolus Flavius
