As if there isn’t enough danger on this God-forsaken island, the alligators, it seems, have developed a new appetite – for us! Once, they were content to share the bounty of the Fens with us, but now they are creeping ever closer to our fishery. Last evening one of our fishing boats was attacked, and poor Johnson barely escaped with his life. His wife has begged him not to return to work, and I can’t say I blame her for it.
I’ve heard stories of a strange sickness creeping over the land, driving the wildlife into a frenzy. I wrote it off as mere hysteria – another superstition formed in a place that defies explanation. But now I am not so sure. If something has tainted he alligators’ food supply, they’ll turn on whatever’s still unspoiled. After all… to them, we’re just meat…
