Tenny’s Doubt

A page from Captain Hugh Ainsley’s journal

Tenny came to me this evening. He wore not his usual livery, but a plain tabard that made him seem somehow unclothed. His eyes were downcast. “Captain. I heard Minister Lochnir will speak to Ser Dubois,” he said. “Yes,” I replied. “The four seals are needed to retrieve the crown for the True Heir.” I saw a doubt in his eyes. I hid my own, and waited. “The True Heir- has changed.” I felt a righteous anger enflame my face. “He has sacrificed!” I met his fearful stare and realized that I stood, sword drawn, as if I would hew him down. I tossed aside the weapon and took his shoulder. “Tenny! The heavens have granted us the greatest honor, to follow Ser Gawain. Wear joy in your heart, and don his colors proudly.” I saw his face flush and his eyes kindle with renewed life. “Captain,” he said. - Captain Hugh Ainsley
